September 3rd 2010
WELCOME and CONGRATULATIONS
May I extend a warm welcome to all students and parents, both existing members of the school and those of you who are joining us for the first time. It doesn't seem long since we broke up for the summer and I do hope you have all enjoyed a restful and safe holiday. If you are a new parent you may be assured that we will do everything to ensure Year 7 settle in well. All members of staff are here to support students to make the transition from primary schools successfully and to offer whatever help is required.
I am delighted to welcome you back with news of another successful set of GCSE examination results. 38% 5A*-C including English and Maths equals last year's result when we had a huge increase and we are very pleased to have maintained that improvement. The figure for 5A*-C has risen by 6% to 54%, our best ever result and there is a significant increase in the number of A and A* grades achieved. I would like to congratulate all students on their successes and commend their hard work. I would also like to thank the parents for the considerable support given to sons and daughters during the examination period.
Following our positive OfSTED inspection in June when we were described as 'Satisfactory and improving strongly', our focus this year will be on promoting good behaviours for learning and a culture of respect. Staff, students and parents all have key parts to play in helping to ensure we have an orderly environment in which students can learn well. Your views and suggestions are important to us and there will be a number of opportunities during the year when we will be asking you to share them with us.
As the new term begins may I remind parents that if you are dropping children off at school, or collecting them, you are requested to park outside the school grounds to avoid congestion on the school site. If you need to visit the school during the school day I am pleased to inform you that additional parking spaces have been created at the front of school and a small number of these will be designated for 'visitors' and with 2 spaces reserved for disabled visitors.
Term begins on Monday, September 6th:
Y7 and Y10 arrive at 8.40 a.m.
Y8, 9 and 11 arrive at 10.50 a.m.
On all other days students should be in school by 8.40 ready for an 8.45 start.
I look forward to another successful year at Sewell Park.
