Languages @ Sewell Park
When you join Sewell Park College in September, you will study both French and German in year 7. At the end of the year 7, you can choose between French and German based on this experience. You may wish to study a language you started to learn at Middle School or make a new start in another, just let us know your preference and we will do our best to put you into the language class of your choice.
We have a committed and enthusiastic department with four members of staff who are keen to help you achieve to the best of your ability and give you the confidence to communicate in another language.
What will I study in lessons?
Listening, speaking, reading and writing are the four language skills you will practise, mainly in pairs and groups. You will be listening and speaking to your peers in French and German with the help of a variety of resources eg. video and audio tapes, textbooks and ICT. You will learn to understand young people from French and German speaking countries tallking about themselves, their families, leisure activities, holidays, home town, school, shopping and other topics and will give similar information about yourself.
KS3 and GCSE results in both languages have been excellent in the past two years with more than 70% of students gaining GCSE grades 'C' or above in their language.
How will studying a language help me in the future?
Learning a language plays an important part in gaining a place at University, a job in industry, leisure and tourism or the Law. At the end of year 9, students achieving at a good standard will be entered for FCSE in their chosen language.
What is FCSE?
Throughout years 8 and 9 you will be studying towards FCSE in your chosen language. This is a qualification which is awarded to students at pass, merit or distinction level, and only exists in Languages. It is recognised by employers and gives you credit for your hard work before the end of Key Stage 3. There are no formal examinations as all of the assessments are done within lesson time.
