Why Study Textiles?

This syllabus is designed to provide opportunities for investigation in designing and making through textiles. In order to apply the appropriate designing and making skills students will learn about fashion and furnishing, fabric enhancing techniques, construction methods and use of suitable fabrics. Students will have the opportunity to use computer-linked sewing to create their design. The course also includes organisational skills in designing and creating products as well as knowledge of commercial practices.

 

What Will I Develop in the Lessons?

How to make Garments or Furnishings, Fabric Enhancing Techniques, Construction Methods, how to make choices in Fabric Selections, learning how to sequence work and adapt where necessary, learning to be independent in researching skills, working as a team in mass production projects.

How will I be assessed?

Unit 1: Written Paper

This externally examined paper, lasting two hours, will have questions covering what has been learnt in lessons and will be worth 40% of the final grade. 

Students will be expected to answer ALL questions in both sections of this paper.

 

Unit 2: Design & Making Practice

This is worth 60% of the final grade & consists of a single design & make activity selected from a range of board set tasks.

This unit has to be completed by mid April in Year 11 and is assessed by the school’s design technology staff and moderated by the examination board.
